Need something from another library? Just ask!
The library requests and receives dozens of books, movies, and other materials several times a week from libraries around the state and across the country.
Filling requests can take as little as a day or two from some Indiana libraries to a minimum of two to three weeks through Interlibrary Loan. If there's a reason to rush, let us know and we will try but cannot promise that the material will arrive when needed..
You can check the Evergreen Indiana catalog and place a request if you find a book at another EI library. Here's how that works.
If you need material other than a book, you can use the Request Materials form that appears when you point to the catalog tab on the green bar at the top of any JCPL Web page.
The process of getting books from other libraries and loaning to them in return is known as Interlibrary Loan (ILL). The ILL Specialist processes the requests. To be eligible for ILL, library users must have a library card in good standing - that is, with fines and fees totaling no more than $9.99, from the Jackson County Public Library. Those with cards from other library systems must request ILLs through their home libraries.
When you request material, the library may decide to purchase the material, rather than borrow it, if it is available and if the librarians who select materials believe the item may interest a number of library users. Be sure to tell us if you need the material by a particular date. Also be sure to include your library barcode and your contact information so we know who to tell when the material arrives.
No charge is made by the JCPL libraries for ILL service, but if other libraries charge or if extraordinary charges are added for shipping, those charges will be passed along to the local borrower. Most out-of-state microfilm requests will incur shipping charges. Most other loans still are completed without charge - a bargain these days. The library also may be able to offer alternative sources to meet user needs.
While Interlibrary Loan once was limited to essential materials for research, it now includes movies on current recording media as well as printed fiction.
Histories and microfilmed records and newspapers for historical and genealogical research often can be accessed through Interlibary Loan.
Fees and conditions of use, such as in-library use or length of the loan period, are set by the lending institution.

Instructions for accessing your personal account on the Library Catalog:Click on a "My Account" link and enter your 14-digit library barcode with no spaces. Then enter the PIN (personal identification number) given to you when you received the card. If you do not have a PIN, you will need to visit one of the JCPL libraries and ask to have a PIN entered for you.
To place a hold on an item from the library catalog:
In "My Account" you also can indicate the library at which you would like to pick up the item and how you would like to be notified. You will get a confirmation message or, in a few cases you will get a message saying the hold cannot be placed. You then can click "OK" and you're done!
From "My Account" you also can view the due date of items checked out and holds you have placed on materials not immediately available. Call or email us if you have questions. |
