Library Services
Classroom Collections
Extended Teachers' Loan Period
This service is provided to local teachers by the Jackson County Public Library to complement classroom and school media collections.
1. The maximum length of the extended teachers' loan period is six weeks from the day the collection is put together by the library staff. Teachers may return or exchange the collection anytime before the six-week deadline. If materials are needed for more than six weeks, teachers have the option of renewing the books for an additional two weeks with no further renewals.
2. In order to receive the extended teachers' loan period, collections must be arranged directly with the library staff; otherwise, the standard two-week loan period will apply.
3. Classroom collections may be checked out only to a teacher who has a valid library card. The teacher is responsible for all materials included in the classroom collection. Replacement costs will be charged for all lost and/or damaged books. Overdue fines are five cents per day per item.
4. Teachers may notify the Children's Department (522-3412, ext. 1), Reference Department, (522-3412, ext. 2), Medora (966-2278), or Crothersville (793-2927) that a classroom collection is needed.
5. Teachers may request specific titles or subjects; however, inclusion in their collection will be determined by the library staff based on availability and demand.
6. Staff will notify teachers through a message at school or home when a collection is ready. (Teachers with long distance telephone numbers will be asked to set an exact pick-up date or to accept a collect telephone call).
7. Teachers will have one week (seven days) from notification to pick up their collection before it is returned to the library shelves. Collections will be placed in a box labeled with the teacher's name and the six-week due date.
8. All materials should be returned in their original box.
9. Due to popular demand, teachers are limited to ten accelerated readers per collection. However, sharing with other teachers in your building is encouraged. Thank you in advance for your understanding. Teachers may check out ten more on their card for a two week period with the option of renewing them when due.
Ellison Die Cuts
Ellison dies are located in the Kidz Korner workroom and are available for use by the public. However, the library does not provide the construction paper. Customers must use and bring their own paper. The Friends of the Library donate funds to purchase all dies.

Elementary Teachers
Class Visits to the Library- Stories, songs, book talks, research projects and library tours- With prior notice library staff can set aside reference materials on special assignments to give your students easy access to the materials while working in the library.
Classroom Visits- The librarian will tell your students about the library, read a story, give book talks or tell stories. The librarian can provide stories, songs, finger plays, etc. that relate to your classroom themes.
Classroom Collections- A six-week check out period with an option of a two-week renewal. Materials available include audio kits, music cassettes, music CD's, books on tape, books on CD, magazines, comic books, easy readers, chapter books, fiction, non-fiction, picture books and accelerated readers. Videos and DVDs are available for a two-week loan. Teachers may request a collection by visiting or calling the library. Requests can also be made on-line on the library's parent and teacher page.
Middle School Teachers
Class Visits to the Library- Library tours, book talks and reference instruction- Instruction on using the on-line catalog or Inspire- With prior notice library staff can set aside reference materials on special assignments to give your students easy access to the materials while working in the library.

High School Teachers

The following are suggestions on how we can work together to give students the greatest opportunity in meeting their assignment requirements:
VISIT THE LIBRARY and get to know the librarians. Become familiar with the materials. Schedule a tour for your class.
GIVE LIBRARY STAFF ADVANCED NOTICE of major assignments. "Assignment Alert" sheets are available for you to communicate with library staff about major assignments. Staff can create a reserved shelf of materials for in- library use. Without advanced notice, the first students using the library usually check out most materials on the assigned subject.
CONSIDER GIVING BROAD ASSIGNMENTS to students. Try not to give students identical assignments or to assign the same topics as another teacher.
IF A SPECIFIC TYPE OF BOOK IS ASSIGNED, such as an autobiography, contact a librarian to make sure there are enough "good" books for the entire class.

ABC Teach - This site is for all ages. Kids, parents, student teachers, and teachers will find all they need right here. Abcteach.com has everything from reading comps, research/reports, teaching extras, portfolios, flashcards, fun activities, holidays, months and seasons, theme units, pre-k/early childhood activities, middle school/junior high units, and languages/ESL.
Activity Idea Place - This site has over 2,400 different activities for Early Childhood Educators. This site also has numerous child care related articles and different themes, by topic, to tie into lesson plans.
Child Fun - Theme Activities - At childfun.com you can find crafts and coloring sheets for any occasion. On this site, you can find crafts from President’s Day, Leap Year, Lent, Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, St. Patrick’s Day, Arbor Day, Easter, Lent, Passover, Earth Day, Mother’s Day as well as Father’s Day. This site also has coloring pages relating to President’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Passover, Easter, Mother’s Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Memorial Day, alphabet blocks, alphabet pictures, birdhouses, farm fun, flower gardens, handicaps, shoes, sports, wedding, winter wonderland and many more.
Discovery School - With this website you can find anything related to educational programming, such as Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, and the Travel Planet. You will also find a library of lesson plans here. Just select a subject with the grade and a variety of lesson plans will appear. This website also offers teaching tools, a curriculum center, and homework helpers.

The New Americans - This website gives educators lesson plans that deal with historic and modern day immigration. These lesson plans give students hands on experience and a better understanding of immigration issues.
Nuttin'But Kids - Browse through different teaching themes on this website, such as back to school, the five senses, fundraising ideas, and many more. Printables are also located at this site. Browse through a list of mazes, coloring sheets, bulletin board patterns, etc. While also visiting, check out the recipes and fun games this website holds.
Planet Pals Earth Zone - This is a great site for teachers and parents who are teaching their children about the universe. Check out their booklist of great Earth books, their online store, and lesson plans that will help you teach about Earth.
Pre-K Thematic Units - Come visit Ms. Cox’s Pre-K class at St. Teresa School and check out the themes and project link. Click on a theme and get great ideas on books, circle time, art projects, printables, cooking activities, literacy, fine motor, math, and science activities.

This website is also a great resource for students. Click on the student zone tab and find homework helpers, internships, and other educational on-line games and puzzles.
