New Juvenile Fiction Section

The Jackson County Public Library (JCPL) has added a new Juvenile section in Fiction called “Early Fiction”. This section fills in the gap between Easy Readers and Fiction.

A child may be ready to read more chapter books, but is still at an early reading level. This is where Early Fiction steps in. JCPL has pulled advanced level books from Easy Readers and beginning chapter books from Fiction to create this new section of “in-between”.

In terms of Accelerated Reader, most of our Easy Readers are at level 0-2.5, while Early Fiction has books generally from level 2.6-3.5. Accelerated Reader is used in many schools to help teachers track students’ independent practice and progress with reading, however, the library does not require children to read according to the Accelerated Reader standards.

The Spine label where the call number is written on the side of the book, is noted as “JUV EARLY FIC” for Juvenile Early Fiction.

The Crothersville library, Medora library, and the Discovery Bus Early Fiction books will be interfiled with other Fiction and will stand out differently among them with red stickers on the spine label of the book.

Come see our new Early Fiction section when the library is open next or call (812) 522-3412 Option 2 if you have any questions about it!
